Practice Chanters
Lothian Bagpipes offers practice chanters by McCallum, David Naill, John Walsh, Dunbar, Peter Henderson, MADDOG (our in-house brand), and Shepherd.
Practice Chanter Types
Our practice chanters come in both long and standard sizes made out of either blackwood or plastic.
Blackwood or Plastic? - Blackwood chanters tend of have a warmer, richer sound to them and are the choice of professional players. But they are easily broken and require care and attention. Plastic chanters are much more durable and work well for anyone looking for an easy-to-manage practice chanter that can take some abuse.
Long practice chanter - This type of chanter has finger hole spacing that most closely resembles an actual bagpipe chanter. It is a great learning tool that helps you more easily transition to the bagpipe when ready because the feel between the practice chanter and the bagpipe chanter are very similar. This is our recommendation to all new learners, unless you are a young child or an adult with a physical impairment that would make the wider hole spacing difficult to play.
Standard practice chanter - This type of chanter has finger hole spacing that is much closer together compared to the long chanter. We recommend this chanter to anyone that would have difficulty with the wider spacing on the long practice chanter.
